In 2019, Chesterfield County Public Schools in Virginia set out on a mission to replace their long-standing middle school with a new school building. Originally built in the 1960s, Manchester Middle School hadn’t undergone a serious renovation in over 35 years. To bring the educational institution into the 21st century in a major way, they planned to replace the existing building with an all-new, two-story modern learning environment capable of accommodating 1,100 students. In order to bring their vision to life while adhering to the budget, timeline, and aesthetic requirements, Tindall was called in to deliver the perfect precast solution.

The new 139,011-square-foot educational facility at Manchester Middle School included over 40 classrooms, flex spaces, a full gym, a 600-seat auditorium, and a 400-seat cafeteria. To create the exterior walls of this institutional structure, Tindall produced over 260 architectural precast wall panels coming in at nearly 60,000 square feet of concrete. These precast wall panels featured a variety of architectural precast elements, including thin brick, pigmented concrete, and both sandblasted and acid-wash concrete finishes.
One of the things that made the Manchester Middle School construction project so special is that students, faculty, and community members were able to vote on various design elements for the new school through an online survey. The final design for the precast concrete wall panels featured custom-sized embedded thin brick. Tindall worked closely with both the thin brick supplier and the architect to incorporate the bricks into the precast wall panel manufacturing process. By leveraging architectural precast concrete wall panels instead of a conventional cavity wall, Tindall was able to rapidly deliver a cost-effective and aesthetically striking solution for Manchester Middle School’s exterior.
